Do Senior Dogs Need Vitamins?

It's one of the most common questions owners ask as their dog gets older. The short answer: a healthy dog eating a complete, balanced food may not need extra vitamins for senior dogs. Many older dogs still benefit from targeted support, though, and your vet can tell you which.

What changes as dogs age

Older dogs often eat less, absorb some nutrients less efficiently and deal with joint stiffness, duller coats and a weaker immune response. That's why many owners look at senior supplements.

Supplements owners commonly use

  • Glucosamine for joint and mobility support
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) for skin, coat and joints
  • Probiotics for digestion
  • A daily senior multivitamin to fill gaps in a smaller appetite

Questions to ask your vet first

  • Does my dog's food already cover this?
  • Will this interact with any medication they take?
  • What dose is right for my dog's weight?

Make it easy

If your vet gives the go-ahead, a chewable is the simplest way to give a daily supplement. Our Senior Dog Multivitamin covers everyday nutrition, and our Glucosamine Dog Chews combine joint support, omega-3 and probiotics in one treat.
